How do I know what skin type I have?

Making sure you have the correct skin diagnosis is probably the most important stage when deciding on skincare. If you have this wrong you will not get the results you should.

So how can you tell what skin type you have?

There are 5 Basic Types of skin:

  • Dry Skin
  • Combination Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Normal Skin
  • Sensitive skin

Self check:

Dry skin:

  • Pores are tight
  • You have no/minimal shine
  • Can feel tight
  • May have flaky skin
  • May feel rough when touched
  • May have wrinkles/fine lines other than expression lines
  • Minimal pimples

Combination Skin:

  • Shiny nose throughout the day may have dryness on cheeks
  • Open pores on nose/chin
  • Pimples occur but not a problem
  • May find it hard to get a moisturizer that hydrates without making skin shiny

Oily Skin:

  • Shiny when you wake up and throughout the day
  • Pimples frequently
  • Open pores/Blocked pores
  • Feels soft to touch
  • Minimal wrinkles/lines

Normal Skin:

  • No pimples
  • Pores are there but not too open
  • No problem with shine
  • No problem with Dryness/tight feeling
  • Soft to touch
  • Can use most products and have no reaction/side effects

Sensitive Skin:

  • Redness on face. Usually cheeks
  • Visible capillaries
  • May have red bums on the face (usually T-Zone)
  • Hot to touch in areas
  • Reactive to products

This will give you an idea of your skin type.

Lots of people believe they have sensitive skin. In actual fact the majority are “sensitized”. Usually from incorrect skincare, sun exposure and weather damage.

Your probably wondering where the conditions such as Ageing /Dehydration /Pigmentation /Acne are?

These are NOT skin types they are “skin conditions”. Do not chose a skincare regime based on just these.

The most effective way to determine your skin type is to see a professional and have your skin evaluated with the use of a Skin Scanner. This differentiates skin types by using different colours so there is no mistake and you can get the correct advice on what to use.

Facials are a great way to initiate a new routine and see how your skin reacts. You should receive a thorough consultation before your facial and a prescription of skincare perfect for you.

Making sure you have the correct skin diagnosis is probably the most important stage when deciding on skincare. If you have this wrong you will not get the results you should.
